Together We Stand & Race Against Drunk Driving: Walk Like MADD on September 15, 2018

Every year, far too many of our friends and family members fall victim to one of the most preventable crimes that still plagues our society:  drunk & impaired driving.  One of the biggest problems is that about 1/3 of all drivers arrested or convicted of drunk driving are repeat offenders. (NHTSA Traffic Tech Study, No. 85).  These folks are just not getting the message.

Increasingly, drugs other than alcohol are involved in about 18% of all motor vehicle driver deaths. (NHTSA 2010).  In 2016, one person every 50 minutes was injured or killed in drunk driving crashes.   (NHTSA Traffic Facts 2016:  Alcohol Impaired Driving).  Drunk Driving costs each adult in the United States over $500 per year. (MADD 5th anniversary report to the Nation, 2011)  Each day people drive drunk more than 300,000 times, but only 2800 are arrested. (Arrest data: FBI, “Crime in the United States, 2015)

So what is the solution to all of these haunting statistics?  Mothers Against Drunk Driving

MADD works nationwide with legislators and prosecutors to introduce innovative initiatives to prevent and deter drunk driving.  In the United States, the number of drunk driving deaths has been cut in half since MADD was founded in 1980. (NHTSA Traffic Safety Facts 2014) Just as importantly, MADD works with victims and their families to lend emotional support during their darkest hours.  MADD plays an active role during the prosecution of these criminals and walks the victims through the often confusing and exasperating criminal justice process.  MADD compassionately serves a victim every 13 minutes. (Internal MADD tracking data, 2015).
